Leftfield Innovation
In 2017 a group of New Zealand-based innovators realised they were sharing a vision of a sustainable future, where farmers would focus on growing sustainable crops that were better for their land, better for their customers, and create significantly higher returns.
This collection of leading crop scientists, technologists and business innovators formed LFI, and immediately attracted international interest from growers, food manufacturers and advisory firms.
Initial research into near-term opportunities for converting low-yield farm land into high-yield crops through identifying high-value market opportunities that match the agronomy, climate and production systems available is just the first step.

Our Team
Nick Pyke

Nick has extensive expertise in land use and working with growers across a broad range of arable crops. He provides expertise in crop science and understands intimately the production and value-chain systems involved in getting food from the ground to consumers.
Susan Goodfellow
Susan has led a number of significant infrastructure projects in the primary production sector. In addition to her project management skills, she is also extensively networked through both the public and private sectors in the New Zealand primary economy.
John Morgan
John brings a broad understanding of the agri-food sector, and is particularly focused on food innovation. His expertise in food production systems and value chain complements our primary expertise.
Ed Butler
Ed has years of experience in the primary science and innovation sector, ensuring good research and science leads to productive outcomes.
Patrice Feary
Patrice has joined LFI from the professional advisory sector, where she focused on developing deep understanding of consumer needs and the strategies to successfully satisfy market opportunities.
Andrew Plimmer
Andrew is our digital innovator, with decades of producing global innovations in software and hardware systems including artificial intelligence, computer vision, on-farm telemetry and blockchain.
